Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
